Mellitus Health and Smart Meter to integrate cellular-enabled iGlucose BGM with Insulin Insights insulin titration software – September 12, 2018

Smart Meter and Mellitus Health announced a partnership last week to integrate Mellitus Health’s FDA-cleared and CE-marked provider-facing decision support tool, Insulin Insights, with Smart Meter’s cellular-enabled iGlucose BGM. According to the press release, Insulin Insights is capable of titrating “all types of insulin,” eight standard dosing regimens, and 125 combinations of insulin. With this partnership, healthcare providers using Insulin Insights will have access to real-time BGM data via Smart Meter’s API. At ATTD, a Mellitus Health booth representative shared that Insulin Insights is available in 30 “countries and clinics” in Europe and the US.

Per the company website, Mellitus Health’s Insulin Insights (formerly named Insulin Algorithms) generates insulin regimen recommendations using glucose data from “nearly all” BGMs. The healthcare provider must personally relay any therapy changes to the patients. In addition to Smart Meter’s iGlucose, Mellitus Health’s company website lists several partners, including Abbott, Agamatrix, Arkray, Ascensia, Dario, LifeScan, and Roche.

Mellitus Health’s website includes case studies demonstrating Insulin Insights’ impressive efficacy including: (i) A1c decline of 2.4% (baseline: 10.0%) achieved at 180 days (n=17); and (ii) A1c decline of 3.8% points (baseline: 11.0%) achieved over one year (n=110). We’ll be interested to see how Insulin Insights manages to scale and integrate with provider workflow – since providers have to review every recommendation and inform patients of any alterations, efficiency will be key.

This news marks the second insulin dose decision support company with which Smart Meter has partnered, following Glytec’s FDA-cleared Glucommander Outpatient insulin dose titration platform in June. Smart Meter appears to be approaching the crowded BGM space from the perspective of a data provider – rather than relying on marketing its BGM to patients, Smart Meter seems focused on establishing itself as a frictionless data source (cellular BGM) that informs insulin titration and HCP decision making.

As a reminder, Telcare’s cellular BGM is part of Onduo’s virtual clinic (which also integrates with insulin titration tools from Glytec and Voluntis), and Livongo is separately partnered with Glytec to offer basal-bolus insulin dosing titration software.
